Flower Portrait: Ranunculus ‘Elegance® Viola’

Think aristocrats in designer evening wear or superstars on the red carpet. Viola is at home in the most select company and her velvety gown of deepest wine-red petals will vie with the creations of the world’s master designers. (source: Farmer Gracy)

I planted 10 of these ‘claws’ back in late autumn on arrival as stated and kept them under cover in the conservatory. Unfortunately although several plants started to grow they became affected by whitefly and wilted. Eventually I put the container outside and let it take its chances with the rain and cold weather (they are not hardy and need to be grown in a sheltered location over winter or in early spring.) One plant remained. It is very pretty, but I am not sure I shall repeat the experience.

Handsome, but used to too many servants to be practical?

I can’t be bothered with fussy plants. I might be tempted to have one more go and keep the pots in my hall where it is warmer and dry. I had 10 orange ones too 😕

Wow, orange would have looked amazing

I really like that flower. It certainly does look like red velvet.
    Best wishes, Pete. x

It is gorgeous, but £12 for only one flower to actually grow is not a great outcome.

True. A luxury bloom for those who can afford it. x

  5. Sounds a bit of a diva! Very lovely though.

Would have been lovely if all 10 had flowered.

They do seem to be very tricky plants but the flowers are such a beautiful enticement to try growing them…

What a shame! The survivor is very handsome. The Reader added your post ‘Cornwall in colours: a rainbow’ underneath which seemed a bit of a tease in the context.

      How bizarre!

  9. Glamorous evening wear – on a flower!

    1. Heyjude says:

Indeed. Petals really do feel like silk.
