Six on Saturday | Coronation Saturday

In the UK it is a right royal weekend with the second of the Bank Holidays this month. Somewhat typical of our bank holidays rain is forecast. Before you get stuck into waving your flags and scoffing your cucumber sandwiches along with a glass of Bollinger perhaps you could help me with a puzzle. Only last week this beautiful Hakonechloa macra ‘Aureola‘ was looking very good with all the new growth cascading over the edge of the pot and then one morning I awoke to find this:

Horrors! What has eaten my grass?

It lives in the courtyard which is open, but even though there are snails living in the courtyard I have never had anything attack this grass or cause this much damage overnight. And before you ask, no, the naughty sheep are no longer nearby. So… rabbits? But would they come back a second night to almost finish it off? (It has since been moved to the back garden which is fenced off). Answers/advice in the comments please!

Now for the six. All based around the red wine tones in the garden this week. (The header image is a Pasque flower)

Heuchera ‘Coralberry’ is looking very good at the moment and even sending up flower spikes.
The Aubrieta in the sunny wall is also looking good right now.
In a shady place underneath the Contorted Hazel tree is my Asda Acer. Full of new bright dark red leaves.
Asda Acer – a perfect match for the heuchera.
Still in flower are the dark reddish-black tulips ‘Ronaldo’
And slightly more pinky-purple is Thalictrum ‘Black Stockings’ which has the most lovely dark stems. This was bought after seeing the one that the Prop grew. He really does have a lot to answer for.
Weigela ‘Minor Black’ with narrowly ovate, shiny, dark purple leaves. It is a small shrub and this year has more space due to the removal of an overgrown Hebe last autumn.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Jim of Garden Ruminations is now our host and as a former nurseryman has a lot more than the SOS happening over on his blog so well worth following. As always, if you want a peek over other people’s garden walls then please pop over to his site where you find links to many more wonderful garden enthusiasts from all over the world. Your garden is very regal-looking. My eye went to the forget-me-nots(?) in the background – a very atmospheric flower for me. I tried to interest my sweetheart in coronation cucumber sandwiches, but got a resounding ‘no’.

Ah, yes, the forget me nots are masters of photo bombing at this time of year.
