November
No sun – no moon!
No morn – no noon –
No dawn – no dusk – no proper time of day
No warmth, no cheerfulness, no healthful ease,
No comfortable feel in any member,
No shade, no shine, no butterflies, no bees,
No fruits, no flowers, no leaves, no birds !
November!~Thomas Hood (partial poem)

There have been a lot of cloudy days during this month of November – I remember that it was very common to have fog on Bonfire Night (5th November) when I was a child – and living up on a hill means that often we are actually in the cloud or fog for much of the day. Weirdly though when this photo was taken I could actually see the sky. The fog was in a layer over the field behind my house (which dips downhill) and was so dense I could not see the familiar sight of my lovely engine house, Wheal Alice.
Our November, here on the Scottish west coast, has been the opposite of Thomas Hood’s depiction – but last night we had out first frost that might have finally cut back the summer annuals in the garden, and now the dahlias can be lifted. I love the stillness of those cold and misty days though – that lovely silence and the scent of the approaching winter.
Your choice of poem is perfect for your photograph of Disappearing Alice.
Cold and sunny is far preferable to damp and grey!
Beautiful poem very solem
