in my garden | large white butterfly

A large, strong flying butterfly. The brilliant white wings have black tips to the forewings, extending down the wing edge. Females have two spots on the forewings, which is not present in males. The undersides are a creamy white with two spots.

Thanks for the link – that was interesting. We aren’t doing badly for butterfly numbers here, but the variety we see seems to be diminishing.

It has been a wonderful year for butterflies.

  4. I’ll be spotting the spots from now on Jude – thanks for the info.
the Purpletop vervain draws the butterflies like moths to a flame – nice shot Jude

  5. Nice photo, my verbena is finely kicking into gear and realisig I planted it for the flowers not the leggy foliage. Plenty of whites on my sprouts. I reckon they are supporting 100 or so caterpillars. Won’t all make it to butterflies but help a bit. I had my first small tortoiseshell butterflies in yesterday. Glad to see as normally common but didn’t have any of the first brood visit my garden.

I saw one small tortoiseshell last week, I usually see quite a few of those. Not been great for butterflies in my garden this year. The verbena is fab once it flowers, it goes on for ages!

      1. Today has been amazing for butterflies in the garden. Hardly been any then today double figures of small toroiseshells, day moths and tons more whites. I’m sure some will feature in this weeks six on Saturday.

A lovely tortoiseshell today, but I didn’t have the camera close by.
