cornwall in colours: copper

Some of my favourite tulips bought over recent years have been those with coppery tones – burnt orange, burnished copper, sunset colours. Ballerina, below, is probably my favourite. A tall, elegant lily-flowered tulip with a citrus fragrance. And one that regularly comes back year after year. I bought another 10 bulbs for this year and these will be replanted in fresh compost in October.

Brown Sugar and Cairo are very similar looking flowers and both have a faint caramel scent. Cairo has more of a smoky brown interior and was bought as part of the Brandy Snap collection from Sarah Raven in 2018.

Some like the Whittallii group (the small ones above) will also naturalise. These start off golden yellow before darkening to a coppery orange.

By planting tulips in single colours and in separate containers allows you to move them around to create different colour combinations. I am quite liking the orange tones with the new red tulips I bought this year. Lasting Love in particular matures to a very dark purple-red tone.

Whilst we are confined to #StayAtHome I will be posting photos from around my house and garden to hopefully cheer us all up.

  1. Aren’t they stunning. I’ve so enjoyed all your beautiful tulips, Jude.

I’m still enjoying them, though some are on their way out now.

I love these colours too. I didn’t realise they had a smell, I must go and sniff mine.

  5. Beautiful tulips with great lighting. 😊

    1. Heyjude says:

I have a south-west facing garden so the light is very good, especially in the evening.

Cheerful colours to have around the house. Our three tulips lasted two weeks, then flopped!
    Best wishes, Pete. x

My earliest ones in the zinc planter are just coming to an end after several weeks, and the lily-flowered ones have been going for 4 weeks so I have definitely had my money’s worth this year.

  7. Lovely tulips and the coppery tones are so vibrant!

    1. Heyjude says:

      My favourite colours.

Just beautiful, those tulips, and exquisite photos as well. I have only planted species tulips this year, so have been enjoying the photos you’ve taken.

    1. Heyjude says:

My species tulips disappeared after the first year! I might try some again though as there are so many lovely specimens.

  9. Sue says:

    Oooh, delicious colours, Jude!
