The new spring gorse is flowering right now and it is lovely – such a bright and vibrant golden-yellow. Common gorse is a large, evergreen shrub, covered in needle-like leaves and distinctive, coconut-perfumed, yellow flowers during the spring and summer. You will find it on the windy, open moors all around the UK.
And when the sky is blue there is no better contrasting colour. Though, perhaps because the temperature is still rather low, I could not discern any noticeable coconut perfume when I very carefully reached out to have a sniff.
Whilst we are confined to #StayAtHome I will be posting photos from around my house and garden to hopefully cheer us all up.
For me, gorse can only be enjoyed in your photos Jude. It is a nightmare here โ my nightmare as I once had a summer job clearing the stuff from roadsides.
I am grateful for your project though; we all need beauty and colour and good cheer.
It is best suited to these open moorlands Su where it looks very beautiful. And the colour at the moment is so fresh and bright.
I can smell the gorse from your beautiful photos. Stay safe
No smell. I wonder if the later gorse has more of a scent? Or maybe it is because it isn’t warm enough to get the oils working.
I have read that some people can smell it more than others. I could smell the one growing on the edge of my garden the other day when I was clearing some bramble.
I usually smell a really rich coconut fragrance, but not so far. I’ll keep on sniffing – from a distance ๐

Reminds me of my childhood! ๐
The golden flowers are quite beautiful against your wonderful blue sky, Jude.
I wish it was my sky ๐I’d have it this colour all the time.
It’s like an English version of wattle, isn’t it? So cheery. ๐
We had your wattle in our SA garden, so difficult to eradicate.
I have a soft spot for wattle trees. I got one for Arbor Day in primary school and we planted it between the carport and the neighbour’s fence. Then I lost it when a new fence went in a year later. Obviously I’m still upset about that. ๐ Plus, it pops up near the end of winter and I just love the cheeriness.
Yes, the colour is lovely.
Gorgeous, sunny yellow. Very cheering!
