Monkshood or Aconite or even wolf’s bane (Aconitum napellus) is one of the most poisonous plants in the garden. A beautiful but deadly hooded flower that can poison by touch alone. That said, bees and butterflies love aconitums, slugs hate them!
The top sepal forms the trademark “monk’s hood” and just look at that beautiful violet-blue colour and the delicacy of the veins in those petals, it even has fine hairs on the edges!
(This was seen during my walk in the lanes last week, but I think I may have one in my garden, the foliage looks the same, but it has never flowered.)

Poisonous to people Jude??? It’s so pretty, who’d ever guess it was dangerous!
Apparently so! Touching can cause headaches, ingesting is fatal, but it tastes so horrible you probably wouldn’t eat it! But it can also be used in homeopathic medicine. I guess you have to know what you are doing!
Oy, no thank you!
Purple flowers are my absolute favourite! Beauty that holds such power!
How are you feeling? Is your back all better?
Better than it was, thanks PP. Seeing a physio next week, so hopefully that will help.
Hang in there. Glad to hear it is improving. Cheering you on for complete recovery!
Thanks PP 🙂
It looks so pretty too – would never have known so thanks for the information in case I ever encounter it (not of course here in Perth!).
Yes I’ve always like them but resisted because you just never know.
I love these but had no idea they can poison by touch.
