Cornish favourites: Engine Houses

Something you cannot fail to see if you come to Cornwall are the many disused engine houses dotting the landscape. They are not unique to Cornwall as Devon also used to have them, but there are fewer surviving engine houses in Devon.

If you have ever visited Cornwall, or if you have watched Poldark, then you will be aware that the county is littered with the remains of abandoned engine houses and chimney stacks. It would be remiss of me not to show some of these, though I didnโ€™t venture down the one open to the public (Geevor Mine above) as I suffer from mild claustrophobia and canโ€™t stand being in the dark.

I remember the original, but this got me thinking. I would go down inside, just to see what it was like. ๐Ÿ™‚

Oh, marvellous! I have been down inside mines, but not a Cornish one, though I would have loved to…alas no longer possible with my balance!

  4. I kept hoping Ross might appear around the corner of one of these buildings!

  5. Burra in SA attracted a lot of Cornish miners, and such edifices, if my memory serves me.

Imagine when there was 3000, they’d be everywhere you turned.

Plus all the noise and the smoke – Cornwall would be a very different place.

Iโ€™m also very claustrophobic Jude so I agree completely! Love the open to the elements ruins
