the night of the storm cat

The storm cat arrived last night
yowling over the roof tops,
hissing on my skylights
as I tried to sleep below.

He rattled the chimney flue
and prowled stealthily over the tiles,
unsheathed claws scratching,
fishy breath blowing
through every nook and crevice.

He swished his tail
back and forth,
back and forth,
as I waited for him to pounce.

I’m curious–is the Storm Cat a Cornwall thing? The only other time I’ve seen that metaphor used is in the book, The Mousehole Cat. It’s a wonderful image!

I don’t think it is a Cornwall thing, but maybe subconsciously it came to my mind because I have read the Mousehole Cat years ago when I bought the book for my grandchildren. To be honest the wind really sounded as though it was a ‘cat’ trying hard to get into the room.

Oh Jude this is brilliant, you really should do it more often please!

Ah, thank you Gilly, I appreciate your comment since you are the haiku queen, but I don’t think I shall make a habit of writing poetry for the blog.
