The lighthouse stands on a reef known as the Stones. It was built in 1859 following the loss of all hands aboard the SS Nile, a 700 ton steamer wrecked upon the rocks. The lighthouse was manned until 1939.

it’s a lighthouse. What more is there to say? And actually this is a scheduled post, created before I got ill. Which I’m not now, thank goodness. Dreich day today, but going to attempt a beach cafe lunch!!

It’s a shame the weather isn’t like it was last September. How they will cope with two lively boys cooped up inside I don’t know! Alternative is to get wet, but Lorenzo feels the cold quickly, he doesn’t have much meat on his bones.
It’s just different from day to day here. No museums or a pub with ballpool for the kids nearby? When are you doing St. Ives- as part of the trip to the Mount? 🙂
Mmm… might be a ball pool, I think I noticed something when I was browsing last night. We might attempt St Ives at some point. The boy has so far only seen the car parks, but he knows where they all are at least! Still got Kynance and Lizard to take him to on a sunny day!
You have the Narooma colours in your Cornwall water. Aren’t they superb.
I love the colour of the water down here, one of the many reasons that drew me to this county.
These days, we often lose sight of the terrors of the sea, but Cornwall was once a pretty lethal place. Now, with the emphasis is on the pretty, especially on an ‘india summer’ day, the reminder that the lighthouse has a purpose is a helpful one. Thanks for sharing some of the history of those rocks 🙂
It is hard to imagine the brutality and chaos that once dominated these shores. Cornwall in the 1800s must have been a very different place.

Actual blues Pete, I love the St Ives Bay. A softer, warmer colour on the grass. Another rock fall a couple of days ago not so far from this spot. Makes cliff walking a bit dangerous!

Another very nice composition Jude. I never got to walk around the headland sadly and though I’ve taken my powered wheelchair on some fairly wild adventures, there was no way for me to get further than the top car park at Godrevy.
There are some rather steep bits, and the stiles obviously don’t help anyone with mobility issues. I find it difficult to get my leg over (o-O) these days, not sure if it is hip or knee, but I can’t lift them very high – so annoying when I used to leap around over rocks etc like a mountain goat!!

This was taken on our Hell’s Mouth walk. Closest you can get to the lighthouse unless in a boat.
