The Hawk Moth (Laothoe populi) is probably the commonest of our hawk-moths, it has a strange attitude when at rest, with the hindwings held forward of the forewings, and the abdomen curved upwards at the rear.
(in my garden will be an irregular series of things discovered that don’t really fit into any other category.)
Is it trying to look like something else to avoid being eaten, I wonder?
Just as well it’s not in our house, as Julie would swat it!
Regards as always, Pete. x
It’s a large moth Pete and was outside, I have never seen one before. We get a lot of smaller moths indoors – brown stripy ones and a pretty orange one, but no photos 🙂
I could see it was outside, Jude. I just wondered what Julie would make of something like that in the house. She’s terrified of most insects and spiders! x
I’m not crazy about them either, but have kind of got used to living with spiders in the house as long as they stay in the corners! I try and ignore them. I hate the big black ones that scurry across the floor, especially when I have bare feet! It’s the same with crabs – the way they move just freaks me out!
At least we can eat crabs…x
I imagine somewhere in the world they eat spiders too… but not me!
Like a crumpled leaf.
Yes I wouldn’t have noticed it if it hadn’t flown right in front of me so I saw where it landed. Quite a large moth and although common I have never seen one before.
What a spectacular creature. And a spectacular photo. I like the sound of this series.
You and me both, Meg!
You need never go beyond your garden if you’re looking for entertainment, need you? 🙂 🙂 Or up t’hill!
Any jaunts planned now the family have gone?
Not to mention the constant choral rehearsals from next door! I might try and get to a dahlia garden at the weekend, been staying away from the coast this month as it is frightfully busy and parking is a nightmare. But I am itching to walk on the sand again…
I’d be grumpy! I regard local beaches as my territory 🙂
A curious creature!
have you seen one?
Never knowingly….
I like the In My Garden series, so many interesting things to see…
That’s such a spooky looking creature. 🙂
They are funky little things and look like crumpled up brown paper!
Never seen one before!
