I spy…

After a walk around another churchyard in Phillack I followed a track on to the dunes in the hope of getting a view of the sea. I vaguely wondered whether I’d come across any orchids or common blue butterflies, but saw neither until I turned around to walk back and there at the side of the path were dozens of magenta pyramidal orchids (Anacamptis pyramidalis). How did I miss them?

The name ‘pyramidal’ comes from the conical shape of the young inflorescence of this plant. Once the flower is fully developed it becomes more cylindrical or egg-shaped.

Aren’t they gorge nous! How big are they, Jude?

  2. Sue says:

Oops, meant to type gorgeous, don’t know what happened there…..

    1. Heyjude says:

I think gorge nous will do. How big? A few inches off the ground I’d say. In amongst the dune grass. Not hard to see on the way back so maybe it was the sunlight that hid them from view. Or maybe I need to go to Specsavers!!

      1. Sue says:

        Oh, surely the sunlight!

  3. Such a vibrant colour.

    1. Heyjude says:

Indeed. Which begs the question, how didn’t I see them as I was walking towards the sea?

  4. beetleypete says:

Lovely capture, Jude. That colour stands out beautifully against the green.
    Regards as always, Pete. x

    1. Heyjude says:

Our most common orchid, so why do I never see them?

  5. Beautywhizz says:

    Beautiful. What a finding.

  6. Oh, I’m suffering from orchid deprivation. I know Poland has them, but I’m not spying. And you spied dozens. I’m jealous.

    1. Heyjude says:

I knew they grew in this environment which is why I carried on to the dune area, but I didn’t expect to see quite so many. Little beauties, but nothing as dramatic as your locals 🙂

  7. Anabel Marsh says:

    So beautiful! Colour, shape, everything.

  8. Pit says:

    What an absolutely fantastic picture!

  9. restlessjo says:

Funny, isn’t it? Once you’ve spotted the first one you always manage to find its friends. Lovely shot, Jude. We tend to have the more spikey variety. 🙂

    1. Heyjude says:

And they are? Please post a photo!

      1. restlessjo says:

I have folders full, Jude. You’ll have to come round. 🙂 🙂 Not just orchids, I don’t mean but I’d have to post every day to show you half my stuff and we all know life’s too short.

  10. Really gorgeous. Good job you were looking down. The colour is so vivid.
